Two distinct receptors bind the pleiotropic cytokines IL-1a and IL-1b.
The IL-1 Receptor I (IL-1 RI) is an 80kD transmembrane protein expressed predominantly in T cells, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells.
IL-1 Receptor II is a 68kD protein that is found on B lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, large granular leukocytes, and endothelial cells.
Both receptors are members of the immunoglobulin superfamily and show ~28% sequence identity in their extracellular domains.
The two receptors do not heterodimerize into a receptor complex.
Soluble recombinant IL-1 Receptor I is a potent antagonist of IL-1 action.
