VAMP-2 is a member of the vesicle-associated membrane protein (VAMP):synaptobrevin family, which are 18kD integral membrane proteins originally characterized in synaptic vesicles.
The protein forms a stable complex with syntaxin, synaptosomal-associated protein and synaptotagmin which are main components of a protein complex involved in the docking and/or fusion of synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic membrane.
VAMP-2 plays a key role in the fusion of synaptic vesicles.
VAMP-2 is also expressed in non-neuronal tissue and participates in regulated exocytosis, such as insulin-regulated translocation of glucose transporter-4 (GLUT4)-containing vesicles in adipocytes and insulin secretion in pancreatic beta-cells.
In human, the pathological role of the protein has been identified in familial infantile myasthenia (FIMG).
The rat VAMP-2 gene is localized on chromosome 10q24.
