• UNC93B is a member of a novel hUNC93B-related gene family and encodes a 12-membrane-spanning protein related to unc-93 of Caenorhabditis elegans.
• The protein is involved in the regulation or coordination of muscle contraction in the worm.
• The protein is also necessary for TLR signaling and for the presentation and cross-presentation of exogenous antigens.
• The protein specifically interacts with TLR3, 7, 9, and 13 and introduction of point mutation H412R in UNC93B abolishes these interactions.
• Mutation in the missense allele of UNC93B, 3d disrupts exogenous antigen presentation and signaling via TLR.
• The pathological role of the protein has been identified in susceptibility to herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE).
• In human the protein is expressed in heart and at lower levels in kidney.
• In mouse the gene is localized in the chromosomal region 19 A.
