• The Rhox-13 protein is a reproductive homeobox protein found on the X chromosome.
• This transcription factor belongs to the homeobox gene family whose expression organizes programs of development.
• Reproductive homeobox genes regulate development of reproductive tissues including the testis, ovary, and placenta.
• Most of the Rhox genes are expressed in Sertoli cells, the nurse cells in direct contact with developing male germ cells.
• This suggests that they regulate the expression of somatic-cell gene products critical for germ cell development.
• Transcripts of this protein are found in the testis and ovary as early as 13.5Dys post coitum.
• Transcription ceases in the ovary threeDys post partum, but continues in the testis through adulthood.
