Mili, otherwise known as Piwi-like protein 2, is an Argonaute protein, a member of the 'Piwi family.' It is required for germ cell and stem cell development in invertebrates.
Mili is essential for spermatogenesis in mouse and plays a central role during spermatogenesis by repressing transposable elements and preventing their mobilization, which is essential for the germline integrity.
It is also essential for meiotic differentiation and self-renewal of spermatogonial stem cells.
