Myeloid differentiation primary response protein MyD88 is a protein which in human is encoded by the MyD88 gene.
MyD88 is a universal adaptor protein which interacts with all TLRs (except TLR3) and interleukin-1 receptors (IL-1Rs) to activate the transcription factor NF-kB.
Functional studies show that MyD88 is involved in the Toll-like receptor and IL-1 receptor signaling pathway in the innate immune response and acts via IRAK1, IRAK2 and TRAF6, leading to NF-kappa-B activation, cytokine secretion and the inflammatory response.
Studies suggested that MyD88-dependent TLRs and IL-1Rs are essential for protective immunity to a limited number of pyogenic bacteria and enhance the host defense to most natural infections like common viral infections.
