Latexin, the only endogenous specific inhibitor known for zinc-dependent metallocarboxypeptidases, is a 222aa protein belonging to the protease inhibitor I47 (latexin) family.
Human latexin is an elongated molecule with N- and C-terminal domains that each consist of an alpha helix enveloped by a curved beta sheet and the two domains are separated by a connecting segment.
Latexin is a hardly reversible, non-competitive, and potent inhibitor of CPA1, CPA2 and CPA4 but is less potent against other mammalian carboxypeptidases, and it does not inhibit enzymes of other carboxypeptidase classes like metallopeptidases or serine proteases.
In rat, Latexin may be used as a molecular marker for the regional specification of the neocortex.
It is expressed in most tissues with high expression in brain, lung and digestive tract.
