Axonal degeneration contributes to the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative states following mechanical or neurotoxic injury.
Several studies have now demonstrated that overexpression of Nmnat1 (nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferase), a ubiquitously expressed nuclear enzyme that catalyzes an essential step in the NAD (NADP) biosynthetic pathway, has the ability to protect axons from degeneration following traumatic injury.
