The Protein Kinase (PKC) gene family members are highly conserved kinases shown to be involved in signal transduction pathways that utilize membrane phospholipids to generate second messengers.
The mammalian PKC enzyme family consists of at least ten members, a, bI, bII, g , d , e, x, h, q, and l isoforms coded for by nine genes.
The isoforms show distinct tissue, cellular, and subcellular distributions with more than one isoform expressed in a cell type.
