Caspase 2 is a member of ICH1 group of cystein proteases involved in the activation of apoptotic pathway.
It is synthesized as a procaspase2 containing a prodomain, a large subunit and a small subunit.
RAIDD, another molecule involved in triggering the apoptotic pathway recruits caspase 2 through its CARD domain.
Procaspase 2 iscleaved by active caspases 1 and 3 and granzyme into a heterodimer of large and small subunit, both of which are required for the activity.
Caspase 2 exists in two isoforms, long and short created through the alternate splicing of the mRNA.
The long form activates apoptosis while, the short form is inhibitory.
