The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a large family of zinc endopeptidases.
All MMPs are synthesized as inactive proenzymes.
The activation of these proenzymes is a critical step that leads to degradation of extracellular matrix components such as fibronectin and collagen type III.
At least 2 isoforms of MMP16 are produced by alternate splicing.
The Long isoform is a single-pass type 1 membrane protein.
The Short isoform is secreted.
Both forms of MMP16 activate MMP2 (progelatinase A) by cleavage.
