The Insulin receptor binds insulin and has a tyrosine-protein kinase activity.
The receptor is a tetramer of 2 alpha and 2 beta subunits linked by disulfide bonds.
The alpha subunit (135 kDa) is extracellular and contributes to the formation of the ligand-binding domain whereas the beta subunit (95 kDa) contains the kinase domain and a transmembrane domain.
At least two isoforms of the Insulin receptor are produced by alternative splicing.
