The inhibin alpha chain is a 366 amino acid polypeptide with a predicted molecular weight of ~40kD.
It is composed of an N-terminal 18 amino acid signal peptide, two pro-peptide regions of 43 and 171 amino acids respectively and the 134 amino acid inhibin alpha chain.
Inhibin alpha dimerizes with with inhibin beta A to form Inhibin A or with the inhibin beta B chain to form inhibin B.
The active inhibin alpha chain is derived by cleavage of the inhibin alpha chain from the pro-peptide domains and subsequent dimerization through appropriate disulphide bond formation.
Inhibins regulate follicle stimulating hormone secretion from the pituitary gland (Lumpkin et al.
1981).
Inhibin alpha is expressed in the testis (Bergh and Cajander 1990) and ovary (Cuevas et al.
1987, Yamoto et al.
1992).
Inhibin alpha expression has also been noted in the adrenal glands (McCluggage et al.
1998), endomertium (Mylonas et al.
2004) and brain (Uccella et al.
2000).
Inhibin alpha expression has also been noted in a variety of neooplastic tissues including Leydig cell tumors (de Winter et al.
1992), brain tumors (Demura et al.
1995), ovarian cancers (Cooke et al.
1995) and adrenal carcinomas (Pelkey et al.
1998).
