The phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of proteins on serine and threonine residues is an essential means of regulating a broad range of cellular functions.
The serine/threonine protein phosphatases (PP) are intimately involved in this process.
Protein phosphatase 4C may be involved in microtubule organization.
PP4 consists of a catalytic subunit, PPP4C, and a regulatory subunit, PPP4R1, and belongs to the PPP phosphatase family.
More specifically it is part of the PP-X subfamily.
PP4 is specifically associated with NF-kappa B, p50, c-Rel, and RelA, which are pleiotropic transcription factors that play central roles in the immune and inflammatory responses, as well as apoptosis.
