IL-12 is a heterodimer composed of subunits IL-12A p35 and IL-12B p40.
Autocrine IL-12 is responsible for the differentiation of naive CD4+T cells into type 1 helper T cells (Th1) that produce interferon-_ (IFN-_).
Expression of STAT 4, a signal transduction molecule important in cytokine-induced gene expression, appears central to IL-12 induced Th1 production of IFN-_.
It also activates production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) from T and natural killer cells.
IL-12 induces autoimmune inflammation and thus may be responsible for autoimmune inflammatory diseases and may be important for tumorigenesis.
