It has been suggested that the hormone resistin secreted by adipocytes, links obesity to type 2 diabetes by modulating steps in the insulin-signaling pathway and inducing insulin resistance.
Levels of circulating resistin decrease following treatment with the anti diabetic drug rosiglitazone and increase in diet-induced and genetic forms of obesity.
In addition, treatment of normal mice with recombinant resistin impairs glucose tolerance and insulin action.
Insulin-stimulated glucose uptake by adipocytes is enhanced by neutralization of resistin and is reduced by resistin treatment.
