AFP (a-Fetoprotein) is a 69-73kD member of the ALB/AFP/VDB family of proteins.
It is secreted by fetal liver and serves as a carrier molecule for phytoestrogens, heavy metals (Cu and Ni), estrogen and fatty acids.
Mature mouse AFP is 587 amino acids in length.
It contains three albumin domains (aa20-201, 208-393 and 400-591), plus 15 intrachain disulfide bonds.
Rat AFP contains an alternate start site at Met287 that may generate an intracellular 37kD form.
Mouse AFP also shows an analogous site at Met281 that may produce an equivalent isoform.
Over aa19-605, mouse AFP shares 83% and 66% aa identity with rat and human AFP, respectively.
