• DDX3X, DEAD (Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp) box polypeptide 3, X-linked, is a member of the DEAD box family of proteins.
• Characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD), DEAD box proteins are putative RNA helicases.
• They are implicated in a number of cellular processes involving alteration of RNA secondary structure such as translation initiation, nuclear and mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly.
• Based on their distribution patterns, some members of this family are believed to be involved in embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, and cellular growth and division.
• DDX3X is an ATP-dependent RNA helicase and acts as a co-factor for XPO1-mediated nuclear export of incompletely spliced HIV-1 Rev RNAs.
• DDX3X is also involved in HIV-1 replication and interacts specifically with hepatitis C virus core protein resulting in a change in intracellular location.
