Mammalian MD-1 is a homolog of Chicken MD-1, which was previously isolated as a v-myb-regulated gene, since its transcription increases rapidly after v-myb induction.
MD-1 is associated at the cell surface with RP105.
RP105 is a leucine-rich repaeat (LRR) molecule that is expressed on B-lymphocytes.
It was first identified by a mAb that protects spleen B cells from irradiation-induced apoptosis (2).
LRR proteins, such as Toll receptors, have a role in innate immunity.
MD-1 does not have any homology to other molecules.
MD-1 when expressed alone behaves as a secretory protein.
Expression of MD-1 in a cell increases the expression of RP105.
