Small ubiquitin-related modifier (SUMO) proteins are conjugated to numerous intracellular targets and serve to modulate protein interaction, localization, activity, and stability.
SUMO (also known as " Smt3 " and " sentrin " in other organisms) is linked to several different pathways, including nucleocytoplasmic transport.
The attachment of SUMO to targets proteins is stimulated by (protein inhibitor of activated STATs PIAS) proteins that serve as E3-like ligases.
