Thrombomodulin (TM; also fetomodulin and CD141) is a 110-120kD, endothelial cell-specific type I transmembrane glycoprotein.
It binds thrombin, rendering it unavailable for clotting, and activates protein C, which also serves as an anticoagulant.
Mouse Thrombomodulin/TM is 577 amino acids (aa) in length.
It contains a 510aa extracellular domain (ECD) (aa17-517) that shows one C-type lectin domain (aa31-167) and six EGF-like regions (aa240-480).
Thrombin binds to aa403-480.
One isoform may exist that shows a deletion of the C-terminal 86 amino acids (aa492-577).
Over aa17-517, mouse TM is 66%, 85% and 67% aa identical to human, rat and canine TM, respectively.
