Regenerating islet-derived protein III alpha (Reg IIIa), also named Pancreatitis Associated-Protein 2 (PAP-2), is a secreted, 17kD member of the Reg family.
These C-type lectin superfamily proteins are involved in various biological functions, including liver and pancreatic regeneration and proliferation.
Reg IIIa is predominately expressed in intestine and exocrine pancreas.
It is also induced in primary liver tumors but is not expressed in normal liver.
Mature mouse Reg IIIa contains 149aa residues and shares less than 60% aa sequence identity with other Reg III proteins.
The protein sequence of mouse Reg IIIa is 87% and 61% identical to that of rat and human Reg IIIa, respectively.
