Aurora B, a serine/threonine protein kinase, is a key regulator of the onset of cytokinesis and chromosome segregation.
Phosphorylation of Histone H3 at Ser 10 and Ser 28 by Aurora B contributes to chromosome number instability and mitotic chromosome condensation.
In addition, Aurora B phosphorylates MCAK (mitotic centromere-associated kinesin) on Ser 92 and this inhibits MCAK’s microtubule depolymerizing activity.
Aurora B localizes to kinetochore fibers during chromosome movement and segregation.
