Survivin, otherwise known as TIAP/BIRC5, is a novel inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) protein, and component of the chromosomal passenger complex, which plays a key role in the regulation of mitosis.
Survivin is only expressed during the G2-M cell cycle phase, and is predominantly expressed in fetal tissues, and in many human cancers, including adenocarcinomas and high-grade lymphomas.
The lack of survivin expression by normal non-malignant cells, makes survivin an important therapeutic target for cancer.
