Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs), a group of structurally and functionally related growth factors, may play important roles in vascular system formation during embryonic development, the regulation of capillary growth in adults, and the maintenance of normal vasculature.
VEGF-C is a ligand for the receptor tyrosine kinases VEGFR-3 and VEGFR, bothof which are expressed by endothelial cells.
VEGF-C mRNA has been detected in human heart, placenta, muscle, ovary, and small intestine, as well as in malignant tissues.
A study of 35 tumor samples detected VEGF-C mRNA expression in over 50% of tumor specimens, including breast carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, melanomas, sarcomas, and adenomas, with notable low-level consistency for all lymphomas examined.
VEGF-C has been implicated in lymphangiogenesis, physiological angiogenesis, and the development and progression of angiogenic diseases, including the angiogenesis associated with breast cancers.
