Cytokeratin filaments consist of a complex family of approximately 20 different cytokeratin polypeptides with relative molecular weights of 40kD to 68kD.
These intracellular intermediate filaments of 10nm in diameter provide structural integrity to epithelial cells.
All the filament subunits share a general common fibrillar organization, consisting of a central alpha-helical rod that is flanked by N- and C-terminal domains at each end.
Generally, low molecular weight keratins are expressed in the early stages of cell development, whereas high molecular weight keratins are expressed in maturing cells.
This antibody may be useful in determining if a neoplasm originated from an epithelial or non-epithelial source, and is especially useful for the distinction of metastatic malignant tumors of epithelial origin.
