MAP kinase kinase 6 (Mek6/MKK6) is a 38 kD dual-specificity protein kinase that is abundant in skeletal muscle and is activated by UV light, anisomycin, osmotic shock and inflammatory cytokines, but not by phorbol esters, NGF or EGF .
Mek6 phosphorylates and activates MAP kinases such as p38 and p38 beta .
Mek6 is phosphorylated and activated by ASK1, a MAPKKK that induces apoptosis when overexpressed.
Mek6 also interacts with mixed lineage kinase-3 (MLK-3), a kinase that participates in stress response kinase cascade, possibly by phosphorylating MKK4, an isoform of Mek6.
