Casein kinase II (CK2), a serine/threonine protein kinase, is a holoenzyme (130kD) comprised of two alpha subunits (catalytic) and two beta (regulatory) subunits (2).
The alpha subunit may be present as either the 45kD alpha subunit or as the 41kD alpha’ isoform.
CK2 phosphorylates many proteins in vivo, on serine or threonine residues that are N-terminal, to acidic amino acids such as in casein.
