Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a member of the class III intermediate filament protein family.
It is heavily and specifically expressed in astrocytes and certain other astroglia in the central nervous system, in satellite cells in peripheral ganglia, and in non-myelinating Schwann cells in peripheral nerves.
In addition neural stem cells frequently strongly express GFAP.
Antibodies to GFAP are therefore very useful as markers of astrocytic cells.
In addition many types of brain tumor, presumably derived from astrocytic cells, heavily express GFAP.
Applications:Suitable for use in ELISA, Western Blot, Immunofluorescence, Immunohistochemistry and Immunocytochemistry.
Other applications not tested.
Recommended Dilution:Western Blot: 1:50,000 detects a band at ~55kD, as well as an appearent breakdown product at ~48kD

Storage and Stability:May be stored at 4°C for short-term only.
Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing.
Store at -20°C.
Aliquots are stable for 12 months.
For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
