Type 1 protein phosphatase (PP1), a serine/threonine phosphatase, is highly conserved in eukaryotic cells.
Four isoforms of PP1 have been characterized: PP1 alpha, PP1 delta, PP1 gamma1 and PP1 gamma2.
Involvement in the cell cycle regulation is one of the biological functions of PP1.
It has been illustrated that PP1 dephosphorylates pRB and cdc25 during mitosis.
The activity and specificity of PP1 is highly regulated by regulatory subunits and targeting proteins.
In addition, a cell-cycle dependent phosphorylation at threonine 320 of PP1• by cdc2 kinase has been reported recently, which inhibits PP1• activity.
