The transcriptional nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) plays a pivotal role in inflammatory and immune responses (1,2).
NF-kappaB is composed of a heterodimer of p65 and p50 subunits in most cell types and is sequestered in the cytoplasm by its inhibitory proteins, the IkappaBs (3-5).
NF-kappaB-activating agents can induce the phosphorylation of IkappaBs; the phosphorylation targets them for rapid degradation through a ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, thereby releasing NF-kappaB to enter the nucleus for gene expression (6-8).
It has been shown that the p65 NF-kappaB subunit is also phosphorylated during the phosphorylation and degradation of IkappaBs; the phosphorylation site is Ser536 in the C-terminal transactivation domain (9).
