Myristoylated Alanine-Rich C-Kinase Substrate (MARCKS) is a widely expressed substrate of PKC.
MARCKS is essential in neuronal development, as mice deficient in it die shortly after birth.
Through its basic effector region, MARCKS associates with acidic membrane phospholipids, actin filaments, and calmodulin.
Poly (ADP-ribose) also binds the basic effector region, blocking calmodulin binding, membrane association, and phosphorylation by PKC, suggesting that MARCKS may be an effector of the DNA-damage signal transduced by poly (ADP-ribose).
