Type IV collagen is a major component of the basement membrane and it associates with laminin, entactin and heparin sulfate proteoglycans to form sheet-like structures that separates epithelium from connective tissue.
It is a long triple helix containing several interruptions, which is characterized by a specific carboxylterminal, non-collagenous NC1 domain.
It is composed of six genetically different alpha (IV) chains, alpha1 (IV) to alpha 6(IV) and their genes are paired on three different chromosomes in a head-to-head arrangement.
The alpha 1 gene and the alpha 2 gene are localized on chromosome 13q34, the alpha 3 gene and the alpha 4 gene are on chromosome 2q36, and the alpha 5 gene and the alpha 6gene are on chromosome Xq22.
Type IV collagen can be used as a thin coating on tissue culture surfaces to promote cell attachment and proliferation and to study its effects on cell behavior.
