Ganglioside GT1a is a trisialoganglioside and sphingolipid.
It is characterized by having two sialic acid residues linked to the terminal galactose, unlike ganglioside GT1b, which has two sialic residues linked to the inner galactose unit, and is expressed in the brain and in motor endplates of extraocular neuromuscular junctions.
Ganglioside GT1a is similar in shape to lipo-oligosaccharides (LOS) on the membranes of certain pathogens, including C.
jejuni and H.
influenzae.
Due to this similarity, autoantibodies against ganglioside GT1a can be formed during C.
jejuni or H.
influenzae infection.
These autoantibodies have been found in patients with the acute paralytic disease Guillain-Barré syndrome, including those with the pharyngeal-cervical-brachial regional variant.
Levels of ganglioside GT1a are increased in grade I dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors but decreased in high-grade peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors and ependymomas compared with non-cancerous brain tissue.
