Clostridium difficile is a gram positive motile bacterium which is the leading cause of diarrhea in developed countries.
The incidence of disease in humans varies greatly with age, spore density and the administration of antibiotics.
Toxin B (TcdB) is a large exotoxin.
Its role in disease is less well understood than that of toxin A, though it seems clear that TcdB contributes to disease.
Both toxins modifies the Ras superfamily of small GTPases via glycosylation, inactivating them and leading to the disruption of vital signaling pathways in the cell.
