Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase type 5 (TRAcP), also referred to as Acp5, is secreted by osteoclasts during bone resorption.
Release of TRAcP was stimulated by resorbogenic cytokines and repressed by calcitonin (a resorption inhibitor).
TRAcP is also known to be expressed in high quantities in active macrophages and dendritic cells and play an essential part in presenting antigens to T cells.
Inactive TRAcP released from adipose tissue macrophages has been shown to bring on hyperplastic obesity, keeping lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity normal.
