The human insulin receptor is a heterotetrameric membrane glycoprotein consisting of disulfide-linked subunits in a b-a-a-b configuration.
The b-subunit (95kD) possesses a single transmembrane domain, whereas the a-subunit (135kD) is completely extracellular.
