The temperature-sensitive SV40 T-antigen gene was inserted into 293T cells to make them highly transfectable.
Through cloning and testing with pBND and pZAP vectors, a specific clone, 17, was selected for its ability to produce high levels of infectious retrovirus, resulting in the creation of the 293T/17 cell line.
The characteristic to constantly express the large T antigen from the simian virus 40 make the 293T/17 cells an exceptional choice for transfection experiments.
